An exhibition of models, 3-D images and videos has brought the Old Summer Palace, known as Yuanmingyuan, back to life, giving a fascinating insight into the life of China’s royal families. Sun Yuanqing reports.

More than a century after it was looted (掠夺) and burned down, Y uanmingyuan has been restored to its former glory in a unique way.

Exhibition Glory of the Yuanmingyuan, arouses the history and culture of Yuanmingyuan through models, 3-D images and videos. It is currently on display at the Chinese Culture Center in Moscow in celebration of the China-Russia Tourism Year.

“It is a breakthrough in the history of Yuanmingyuan,” says Chen Yanying, co-curator (联合馆长) of the exhibition. “It is not meant to condemn the countries that took part in the turmoil (骚动), instead, it is going to send a positive voice, to let more people learn about and come to visit Yuanmingyuan.”

Yuanmingyuan’s cultural relics, artworks and architecture that were looted or destroyed in the late 1800s and early 1900s, have now been brought to life on the touch panels. A miniature model of Haiyantang, the largest European garden in Y uanmingyuan, also made its debut (登场), along with replicas (复制品) of the 12 bronze zodiac animal heads that decorate its fountain.

One of the highlights of the event is the various interactive (交互式) programs that allow visitors to not only appreciate, but also take part in the creation process of art, says Chen.

“For people who know little about Yuanmingyuan, pictures alone can’t do it,” says Chen. “That’s why we need to develop experience centers to help people in other countries relate to Yuanmingyuan.”

In the experience center of royal architecture design, visitors can try to build architecture models, discovering how Chinese architecture takes shape without using nails and glue.

In the miniature Banmuyuan Garden, the place where the royal family watched opera, there are handmade embroidered (绣花的) costumes and puppets (木偶), which visitors can try on and pose for photographs with. In the imperial schoolroom, where the princes of the royal family used to study, visitors can learn Chinese calligraphy.

The Eiffel Tower is one of Europe’s most famous buildings. It stands in the Champ de Mars, a park near the River Seine in Paris. It is 300 meters tall and was built by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel for the Paris Universal Exposition in 1889, or “expos” as we now call them, and these “expos” are places where people can see new invention s, new kinds of art, and new kinds of food.

Because the tower was such a tall building, Eiffel wanted to make it

easy for people to get to the top. He wanted to use an elevator, which was

a very new invention at the time. Eiffel asked Elisha Otis to design an

elevator to the first and second platforms of the building. Unfortunately,

the French government did not like the first design that Otis showed them, and they would not let him put the elevator in. By early 1889, the first visitors had to climb hundreds of stairs to get on the first and second platforms of the tower.

The Eiffel Tower cost over a million US dollars — a lot of money at that time. People who invested in the building were worried that they would not get their money back. However, in the first year they got much more than their money back. Thousands of tickets were sold to people who wanted to go up and look at the view from the top.

The opening of the Eiffel Tower took place on 10 June 1889. Eiffel himself lived in the tower where he had his own apartment. Many kings and queens visited the tower during the opening and, of course, they visited Eiffel’s apartment. Although Eiffel designed the tower for people to visit, it was also used for scientific experiments. Nowadays, the tower gets twice as many visitors as the other very famous building in Paris — the Louver.

The Writer Oscar Wilde said that he liked the Eiffel Tower because it was the only place in Paris from which he could not see the Eiffel Tower!

Zhoukoudian is a small village situated about 50 kilometers to the southwest of Beijing. In the 1920s, archaeologists discovered some prehistoric human bones there which changed people’s view of China’s history. They came from an unknown species of man and were the first evidence of human life in China thousands of years ago. The remains were three teeth!

In 1929, a complete skull was also discovered. Eventually, archaeologists found almost 200 items, including six skulls and more than 150 teeth. These discoveries proved the existence of a human species who lived in the area between 700,000 and 200,000 years ago. Four sites where Beijing Man and his relatives lived were discovered on the northern face of Longgushan. They lived in the caves in the area.

However, the life span of Beijing Man was short. About 70% of the people probably died before the age of 14. Fewer than 5% lived to the age of 50. Ashes were found alongside the fossils which showed they had used fire for cooking food and also for light, warmth, and protection against wild animals. This is the earliest evidence of the use of fire anywhere in the world. They also made tools of bones and stones. Unfortunately, when Japan invaded China in 1937, excavations (发掘) at the Beijing Man Site stopped and most of the fossils disappeared, including a Beijing Man skull. After the People’s Republic of China was established in 1949, the work started again.

Zhoukoudian was listed as a World Heritage Site in December 1987. It has not only given us important information about prehistoric Asian societies, but also provided amazing evidence about the process of evolution. Today, parts of the caves have been badly affected by rain. Some areas are almost completely covered in weeds, causing serious damage. Pollution from the nearby factories has also contributed to the problem. This is a very serious matter and the Chinese Academy of Sciences is trying to raise public awareness of it.

My story is about a beggar and me and it took place on the busy streets of Freetown, a modern city surrounded by beautiful mountains and golden beaches.

The beggar, whose name I never knew, had a serious illness. His clothes were ragged, and he wore no shoes, and every day I would see him walking through the busy streets begging for money.

After weeks of trying to beg money from me without success, he blocked my way one morning and demanded that I give him money. I threw a few pennies onto the ground and rushed away, but I knew at once that I could not continue to give him money. I hadn’t come to Freetown to give money to beggars. I had joined the Peace Corps to help another country and learn another

culture.

That day I asked a local woman what I should do about the beggar. “He doesn’t really want your money. This man wants something more from you,”she said with a shy smile. “This man wants your respect.”

I thought about what she said that night and the next day when the beggar came up to me, I shook my head when he demanded his pennies. Suddenly, the Freetown skies seemed to open and it began to pour. I raised my umbrella and said to him, “Stand under my umbrella until the rain passes.” He gave me a surprised look but remained under the umbrella. We never spoke a word for the few minutes it continued to rain and when the sun reappeared, I closed my umbrella, smiled, and waved goodbye.

The following day I saw him again. This time, instead of demanding money from me, he smiled and waved and continued walking down the street. We had both gained something that day: respect for each other.

So you see, everyone needs respect, whatever his age, or whatever his career.

13.What can we learn about Freetown from the passage?

A.It is far away from the sea.

B.It is famous for its beggars.

C.It is a modern city with natural beauty.

D.There are serious traffic jams in its streets.

解析:选C细节理解题。根据第一段可知,弗里敦是一个被美丽的群山和金色的沙滩环绕着的现代城市,即有着自然美景的现代城市。

14.When it began to rain heavily, the author ________.

A.lent his umbrella to the beggar

B.invited the beggar to his house

C.shared his umbrella with the beggar

D.left the beggar behind and walked down the street

解析:选C细节理解题。根据第五段最后三句可知,突然下起大雨时,作者让乞丐在自己的伞下避雨,直到天放晴了才跟他道别。

15.What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.Everyone needs respect.

B.One’s help always counts.

C.We should respect the poor.

D.We shouldn’t laugh at beggars.

解析:选A主旨大意题。本文作者主要通过讲述自己与乞丐之间的故事说明了一个道理:人人都需要尊重。最后一段是对文章主旨的概括。

参考范文:

Plow

Thousands of years ago, the ancient people discovered that plants grew better in the soil that had been loosened. For a long time, farmers used sharp sticks or rocks to loosen the soil. Then about 8,000 years ago, some Arabians in Egypt came up with the idea for a plow. These early plows were simply forked sticks pulled by a person. About 4,000 years later, people began using oxen to pull simple plows. With the development of society, today many farmers use tractors and modern machines to pull huge plows.

The plow is a very important invention because in old days, it allowed people to farm more land and grow more food. And as a result, fewer people died of hunger.

手惰市安逸阳光实验学校课时跟踪练40 Unit 5 Meeting your ancestors Ⅰ.阅读理解 A A letter written by Charles Darwin in 1875 has been returned to the Smithsonian Institution Archives(档案馆)by the FBI after being stolen twice. “We realized in the mid1970s that it was missing,” says Effie Kapsalis, head of the Smithsonian Institution Archives.“It was noted as missing and likely taken by an intern(实习生),from what the FBI is telling us.Word got out that it was missing when someone asked to see the letter for research purposes, and the intern put the letter back. The intern likely took the letter again once nobody was watching it.” Decades passed. Finally, the FBI received a tip that the stolen document was located very close to Washington,DC.Their art crime team recovered the letter but as unable to press charges because the time of limitations had ended. The FBI worked closely with the Archives to determine that the letter was both authentic and definitely Smithsonian's property. The letter was written by Darwin to thank an American geologist,Dr Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden, for sending him copies of his research into the geology of the region that would become Yellowstone National Park. The letter is in fairly good condition,in spite of being out of the care of trained museum staff for so long.“It was luckily in good shape,”says Kapsalis.“And we just have to do some minor things in order to be able to unfold it.It has some glue on it that has coloured it slightly, but nothing that will prevent us from using it.After it is repaired,we will take digital photos of it and that will be available online. One of our goals is to get items of high research value or interest to the public online.” It would now be difficult for an intern,a visitor or a thief to steal a document like this.“Archiving practices have changed greatly since the 1970s,”says Kapsalis,“and we keep our high value documents in a safe that I don't even have access to.” 1.What happened to Darwin's letter in the mid1970s?
