Do you know who Benjamin Banneker was and what he did?Benjamin Banneker was a self-educated scientist at a time when most African Americans were slaves. Born a free blac k man in the British Colony of Maryland in 1731, he received some formal education, bu t he mostly borrowed books and taught himself science and mathematics. At 22, he borro wed a pocket watch, and without any training, figured out how to carve a working woode n clock that chimed each hour. Because of this clock, he became well known and people would visit him just to see his creation.

Banneker ran his family farm for many years, but when he was in his late 50s, a nei ghbor's son lent him a telescope. He became interested in astronomy, the study of the planets and stars, and again taught himself a new science. He made calculations of tid es, sunrises and sunsets, and even predicted an eclipse. For several years he publishe d an almanac of these calculations. Today, he is best known for publishing six almanac s, called "Benjamin Banneker's Almanac" between 1792 and 1797.

In the 1790s, Banneker also helped survey and lay out the land for Washington ,

Early in the 16th century men were trying to reach Asia by traveling west from Eu rope . In order to find Asia they had to find a way past South America . The man w ho eventually found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was Ferdinand M agellan.

Magellan sailed from Seville in August 1519 with five ships and about 280 m en. Fourteen months later, after spending the severe winter on the coast of Patagonia (巴塔哥尼亚), he discovered the channel which is now called Magellan's Strait. In Nove mber 1520, after many months of dangers from rocks and storms, the three remaining shi ps entered the ocean on the other side of South America .

They then continued, hoping to reach Asia . But they did not see any land until they reached the islands off the coast of Asia . Before they arrived at these islan ds, later known as the Philippines , men were dying of starvation. While they w ere staying in the Philippines , Magellan was killed in battles. The remaining officers then had to get back to Spain . They decided to sail round Africa . After many difficulties, one ship with eighteen men sailed into Seville three years after leaving. They were all that remained of Magellan's expedition. However, t heir achievement was great. They were the first men to sail round the world.
