Mrs Elise was my teacher in the fourth grade. One day at lunchtime, I was getting ready to eat my tuna fish (金枪鱼) sandwich and suddenly Mrs Elise asked me if she could buy my sandwich. She explained that I could use the money to buy a hot lunch from the cafeteria (食堂).

Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on 8th January, 1942. He was a world- famous British physicist. He also wrote a children’s book with his daughter. Hawking said the book would be “a bit like Harry Potter” but without the magic. “It explains the wonders of the universe,” said Hawking, while he was on a visit to Hong Kong over 10 years ago.

Hawking was probably the world’s most famous scientist after Albert Einstein. He was an expert on black holes. He had put his whole life into digging into the beginning (and the end) of the universe. “My goal is simple,” Hawking once said. “It is to completely understand the universe, why it is as it is and why it is there at all.”Hawking had a bad illness that kept him from moving or talking. For a period of time, he had no way to communicate except by blinking (眨眼).

He often sat on a wheelchair with a computer by his side. To communicate with others, he moved two fingers to control the computer’s mouse. He selected his words from the screen, which were then spoken by a voice synthesizer (语音合成器).

“I have had the disease for most of my life,”Hawking once said. “Yet it has not stopped me from being successful at my work.”

Although Hawking was such a disabled man, he made great achievements. He had received many awards for his work over the years. These include winning the Albert Einstein Award. In our life, it’s not uncommon to deal with someone who is stubborn (固执的). You may not like such people because they don’t easily listen to you or follow your advice. Well, some stubbornness is really annoying. I’m sure you’ve ever met a very stubborn person and thought why he / she was just so stubborn.

Stubbornness has a time and place, you might think. Standing your ground on important things is a good use of being stubborn. Standing your ground and shouting “Santa Claus isn’t real!” at a younger relative is a bad use of being stubborn. But a new study suggests being stubborn might have some health benefits (益处).

A new study published in International Psy-chogeriatrics aimed (力求) to find out psychological characteristics (心理特点) that may lead to a longer life. The research had a study group of 29 participants (参与者), aged 90 —101 years old, in small villages in Italy. At the end of the study, it was found that even though all the participants were in worse physical health than their younger family members (aged 51—75), their mental health (精神健康) was much better.

Researchers believe that stubbornness helped participants stay mentally energetic because they were less likely to care about what others thought of them and, in turn, would have less stress from it.

“I am always active. I don’t know what stress is,” a study participant said in a test, “Life is what it is and must be faced ... always.” So next t ime you meet stubborn people, you can share the good news with them. Well, just tell them not to be too stubborn.

Many of us still don’t think that we need to recycle things. Sometimes choosing the correct bin (垃圾箱) to put our rubbish in and emptying it seem to need too much effort. In fact, separating our rubbish is not that difficult and only takes a few minutes. In my hometown in the UK, I recycle paper, plastic and glass bottles. I have a bin for food waste. It is difficult for me to put something into the general waste when I know I can recycle it somewhere else.

Sometimes it is hard to understand why recycling helps the Earth. The main rule is that recycling saves the energy that would be required to produce waste products again. Production along with other polluting factors (因素) such as transport is increasing the levels of harmful gases in the atmosphere and this is causing the global temperature to rise.

The saddest part is that most affected areas are the underdeveloped countries in the Global South which don’t have enough money or resources to waste as we do. So they don’t largely result in global warm ing. While they experience natural disasters and changing weather affecting their food production, people like us living in developed countries mostly located in the Global North experience few problems. It has been proven that global warming as a result of human activity does lead to climate change. The present global temperature is rising very quickly.

There are also negative (负面的) effects of recycling. For example, melting down old plastic to make new items can use a lot of energy. On the one hand, this is a method of producing energy. On the other hand, it causes further pollution. Besides, as long as we continue to produce more waste, environmental degradation (退化) will cause more problems and we will have fewer resources, so we need a solution.
