A

Allie saw a little bird, which rested on a light close to the store's ceiling.

As a man left the store, the automatic (自动的) door opened. The bird flew down toward it. Allie held her breath, afraid the bird would crash into the closing door.

But it didn't. It finally landed on top of a mountain of tomato-juice cans, looking nervous.

Allie raced to the door, opening it. “Come on, little bird!” she cri ed, waving her arms. “You can fly away now.”

The bird looked at Allie but didn't move. Mr. Andrews saw this and said, “Let me try.” He stood in the open doorway for a moment. Then he called, “Come on, little fellow. Don't be afraid!”

The bird didn't move. “I'm sorry, but I have to go,” said Mr. Andrews. He left, and the door closed.

Allie and Mom continued shopping. Allie felt terrible each time she heard the birdcall!

Finally, she and Mom arrived at the checkout (收银台) and she saw the bird was on the tomat o-juice cans again, watching the doorway.

Outside, Mrs. Sanchez was coming near the store entrance in her wheelchair (轮椅). She paused in the open doorway and slowly bent down to clean dirt off her shoes.

This was the bird's chance!

Allie called quietly, “M rs. Sanchez, hold still, please!”

Mrs. Sanchez looked puzzled.

After she looked at the bird Allie pointed to, she gave Allie a nod.

Seeing that, Allie's bird flew fast right over Mrs. Sanchez's head and out the door.

Mrs. Sanchez sat up again. “Thanks, Mrs. Sanchez! You helped my bird get out!” Allie cried.

Then she ran to the window. She watched the bird join its friends who were lined up on the wall, waiting, and then fly up into the sky.

1.What was Allie doing when she first saw the little bird?

A. She was drinking tomato juice.

B. She was planning to leave the store.

C. She was shopping with her mother.

D. She was standing on top of a mountain.

2.Mr. Andrews had a try at ________.

A. catching the bird

B. comforting the bird

C. closing the store's door

D. helping the bird fly away

3.What does the under lined word “paused” in the text mean?

A. Searched.

B. Stood.

C. Succeeded.

D. Stopped.

You helped my bird get out”可知,坐着轮椅进商店的Sanchez夫人只有停在商店门口,自动门才能保持开着,小鸟才能飞出去。

4.When Allie watched the bird join its friends, she probably felt very ________.

A. bored

B. happy

C. proud

D. nervous

B

The earth is the only planet that scientists think has life. Why does the earth have life while the other planets (行星) don't? For one thing, the earth is just the right temperature. As the_third_planet from the sun, the earth seems to be just the right distance away. The planets which are closer to the sun are hot that their surfaces bake (烘烤) in the sun. The farthest planets are cold balls.

When the earth developed —which scientists believe may have happened about 4 billion

years ago —many gases covered the earth. The gases caused the earth to be hot. But something wonderful happened. The temperature was just right for thick clouds to form. It rained very hard for a very long time. This gave the earth its oceans. Water made it possible for plants to grow. The plants created oxygen in the atmosphere. Oxygen is the gas that humans and animals breathe.

Only one other planet in the solar system seems to be something like the earth. That planet is Mars (火星). Mars is smaller than the earth, and it is quite a bit cooler. But it is not too cold for humans. On some days, the temperatures are as low as a winter day in the northern United States. If you wore a special space suit, you could walk around on Mars. You would have to bring your own air to breathe, the air on Mars is too thin to breathe.

Mars has the largest volcano (火山) in the solar system. It is sixteen miles high. The highest volcano on the earth is five miles high. The most unexpected (未预测到的) sight on Mars is dried up river beds. Scientists believe that Mars was once much better than it is now. Does this mean there could have been living things on Mars? Scientists are not sure, but there has been no sign so far.

5.Which of the following is NOT the reason that the earth has life?

A. The earth is just the right temperature.

B. The volcanos on earth are lower than those on Mars.

C. There is oxygen in the atmosphere of the earth.

D. The earth seems to be just the right distance away from the sun.

6.The underlined phrase “the third planet” in the first paragraph refers to ________.

A. the Sun

B. the Moon

C. the Earth

D. the Mars

7.Which of the following about the Mars is NOT true?

A. There could have been living things on Mars.

B. Mars has the largest volcano in the solar system.

C. There is almost no oxygen in the air on Mars.

D. Mars is smaller than the earth, and it is quite a bit cooler.

8.If you are a child of seven, you should choose ________.

A. Diving

B. Sailing

C. Surfing

D. Gymnastics

9.If you have a 10-hour course in diving, you should pay ________.

A. £ 100

B. £ 300

C. £ 90

D. £ 60

由Diving中的“£10 an hour. The first lesson, which lasts one hour, is usually free if you decide to carry on.”

10.If you want to increase your confidence, you can call ________.

A. 084 512 97129

B. 015 096 18700

C. 016 378 50737

D. 084 534 50400

由Sailing中的“Sailing is great for building confidence ...”

(1) In the US, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without asking if it will disturb them. At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill. Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day. Serving in restaurants is often large; too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself. Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”. This is an especially big noon meal. Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change. 1. Which statement is true? A. American people like sitting with people they don’t know. B. A hostess always seats a small group at a large table. C. American people never sit with people they don’t know. D. American people would not light a cigarette if the people who sit at the same table mind their smoking. 2. What is served before you order? A. bread B. butter C. coffee D. cold water 3. What do American people always do when servings are too large for them? A. They take the food home with a doggie bag for their dogs. B. They leave the food on the table and go away. C. They take the food home with a doggie bag and enjoy the food later. D. They ask the waitress or waiter to keep the food for them. 4. Sunday dinner is_______. A. a dinner in the evening B. A big noon meal C. a big lunch on Sunday D. A supper on Sunday 【答案解析】本文介绍了美国人在外就餐时的风俗习惯。 1. D。 根据第一段及关键句…it is impolite to light up a cigarette without asking if it will disturb them 可知 A、B、C 与原文不相符,同时关键句告诉我们“未

Unit 1 Festivals around the world FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS Festivals and celebrations of all kinds have been held everywhere since ancient times. Most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Sometimes celebrations would be held after hunters had caught animals. At that time people would starve if food was difficult to find, especially during the cold winter months. Today’s festivals have many origins, some religious, some seasonal, and some for special people or events. Festivals of the dead Some festivals are held to honour the dead or to satisfy the ancestors, who might return either to help or to do harm. For the Japanese festival Obon, people should go to clean graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They also light lamps and play music because they think that will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico, people celebrate the Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people eat food in the shape of skulls and cakes with “bones” on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The Western holiday Halloween also had its origin in old beliefs about the return of the spirits of dead people. It is now a children’s festival, when they can dress up and go to their neighbours’ homes to ask for sweets. If the neighbours do not give any sweets, the children might play a trick on them. Festivals to Honour People Festivals can also be held to honour famous people. The Dragon Boat Festival in China honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Y uan. In the USA, Columbus Day is in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World. India has a national festival on October 2 to honour Mohandas Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain. Harvest Festivals Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter and the agricultural work is over. In European countries, people will usually decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and will get together to have meals. Some people might win awards for their farm produce, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. China and Japan have mid-autumn festivals when people admire the moon and in China enjoy moon-cakes. Spring Festivals The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat and may give children lucky money in red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the Lunar New Year together. Some Western countries have very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. These carnivals might include parades, dancing in the streets day and night, loud music and colourful clothing of al kinds. Easter is an important religious and social festival for Christians around the world. It celebrates the return of Jesus from the dead and the coming of spring and new life. Japan’s Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later. The country, covered with cherry tree flowers, looks as though it is covered with pink snow. People love to get together to eat, drink and have fun with each other. Festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our work for a little while.

Unit 2 Working the land Using language教学案例 会昌中学胡赛君 一、教材分析 “语言运用”部分主要是让学生运用本课文所学的语言知识与课文内容进行听说读写的综合能力训练。 Task I: Read the story and answer the following questions. 1. What is “organic farming”? __________________________________________________________________ 2.What do organic farmers prefer to use as fertilizer? __________________________________________________________________ 3.What do farmers usually put on the soil to make crops grow well?
